Crown Lengthening

Dental Crown Lengthening Mountain View

Crown lengthening is a procedure to expose a greater amount of tooth structure for the purpose of restoring the tooth prosthetically.  For example, when decay occurs below the gumline, it may be necessary to remove a small amount of bone and tissue to fully expose the decay so that it can be properly treated.

Sometimes, crown lengthening is done to improve a “gummy” or unharmonious smile.  The teeth may be the proper length but excess gum tissue may be covering these teeth. During this procedure, excess gum and bone tissue is reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth.

This is done by incising the gum around a tooth and, after temporarily displacing the soft tissue, predictably removing a given height of bone from the circumference of the tooth being operated on. Gum tissue will then be sutured back into place.
